Epoxy flooring performance begins before the coating container is opened. Concrete moisture, surface strength, contamination, old coatings, cracks, movement joints, repairs, access and curing conditions all influence adhesion and appearance. A quotation based only on floor area cannot reliably describe the preparation required or the final system.

Assess the concrete and existing finish
The first review should identify whether the substrate is new concrete, an old painted floor, bare concrete, tile, screed or a repaired area. Weak laitance, dusting, hollow patches and failed coatings must be identified because a new layer bonds only as well as the surface beneath it.
Photographs help with initial planning, but they cannot confirm moisture movement, surface strength or hidden contamination. A site review and appropriate testing may be needed for warehouses, parking areas, kitchens or floors with previous coating failure.
Moisture and contamination checks
Moisture vapour or water entering through the slab can cause blistering, whitening, loss of adhesion or repeated failure. The source may be curing moisture, leakage, washing, groundwater or the absence of an effective barrier. The selected system must be compatible with the measured conditions.
Oil, grease, tyre residue, silicone, detergent and chemical spills can prevent adhesion even when the floor looks clean. Contamination may have penetrated the concrete and can require repeated cleaning, removal or a specialist treatment plan.
Cracks, joints, holes and edge repairs
Static cracks, moving cracks, construction joints and movement joints are not the same. Their cause and expected movement should be considered before filling or coating. Expansion and movement joints normally need to retain their function rather than being hidden under a rigid layer.
Holes, broken edges and low areas may need repair materials compatible with the coating and service conditions. The repair must reach suitable strength and moisture condition before the next layer is applied.
Mechanical preparation and surface profile
Grinding, shot blasting or other mechanical preparation removes weak material and creates a profile for adhesion. The method depends on floor condition, coating system, dust control, edges, access and nearby operations. Simply washing or lightly sanding a heavily used floor may not be enough.
Dust must be removed after preparation, and inaccessible corners, drains, columns and thresholds need specific attention. The prepared surface should be inspected before primer so defects are not hidden by the next layer.
Choose the system for the real operating requirement
A thin decorative coating, a self-levelling system, a textured anti-slip finish and a heavy-duty build-up have different preparation, thickness, curing and maintenance needs. The requirement should describe traffic, cleaning, slip concern, chemicals, temperature and desired appearance rather than using the word ‘epoxy’ alone.
Colour, gloss and aggregate samples can help set expectations, but site lighting and surface condition affect the final appearance. Slip resistance should be balanced with cleanability and the activities carried out in the space.
Access, protection and curing plan
Preparation creates noise, dust and equipment movement. The work area needs safe isolation, ventilation where required, protected walls and equipment, and a route for workers and materials. Occupied sites may need phased work so essential operations can continue.
Curing time depends on the system and site conditions. The floor should not be opened to foot traffic, vehicles, washing or chemical exposure before the approved interval. Early use can mark or damage a coating that appears dry on the surface.
Handover and maintenance information
Record the prepared areas, repairs, primer and coating layers, colour references, batch information where available, application dates and curing restrictions. Note any excluded cracks, moisture risks or inaccessible areas so the customer understands the limits of the work.
Cleaning instructions should suit the finish. Aggressive chemicals, sharp impacts, dragged equipment and unreported leaks can shorten service life. Local repairs should be assessed early before damage spreads under the coating.
